Central Baking Depot

Adlin, Klodz and myself headed off to Central Baking Depot and it was as good as ever. We were very naughty and got 2 desserts to share. Everything here is good so I'm just going to put the pics up without writing the reviews. I recommend that you go try for yourselves. They also have a sister bakery on Bourke St called Bourke St Bakery.
Beef Pie

OK I know I said I won't write a review but this pie is good! Instead of the normal mince used in pies this pie had proper chunks of beef.

Fullhouse (Korean/Japanese)

Fullhouse was a big let down for me. I guess I was really looking forward to good food as it had really great reviews on It had the highest rating amongst all the Korean restaurant in Sydney but when we were there on a Tuesday night, I found the food just average.

We started with complimentary pumpkin soup which was a nice surprise! The soup was actually pretty good - creamy and smooth, maybe a bit too smooth to be home-made?
Pumpkin Soup

My sis had the Katsu Udon which she said was just average. It looks nice though.
Katsu Udon

H had the Sukiyaki Beef Bento. The Sukiyaki was actually pretty good. The meat was tender and cooked in a tasty sweet sauce. Side dishes were good too: potato croquet, crumbed fish fillet, agedashi tofu and salad. The best dish out of the lot.
Sukiyaki Beef Bento Box

As for myself, I had the Unagi Don. As you can see from the pics : where are the unagi? There were only 5 tiny pieces of unagi in the bowl and the rest was filled with salad, rice, seaweed and bonito flakes. The unagi was just average. :(
Unagi Don

Us being the greedy creatures that we are, we also ordered the Salmon and Avocado Roll. The roll was pretty good. They had crab stick, cucumber and avocado in the roll as well as the salmon and avocado on top. However, I thought it could have been better if they had not drizzled the sauce-y thing on it which kinda took away / overpowered the natural flavours of the salmon and avocado.

Home Cooked Meals

Sorry folks, I know it's been awhile since I've updated the blog. Below are some pics of what we've been cooking up at home.

H's home-made Hainanese Chicken Rice. It was yummy and the chilli was pretty authentic too!

Five Spiced Roast Chicken and Tomato & Egg Soup. We were pretty hungry that night and was fighting for the best pieces before I realised that I've not taken a picture !

H made Spicy Chipotle Beef Mince with Tomato and Celery topped with Omelette. One word: SOUR! He was going for the Mexican vibe but I found it too sour for my liking. The next day, we thought we'll experiment and change the flavours slightly. I put some ABC dark soya sauce into the mince and it tasted much better. We also had the mince with fried "bulls eye" eggs instead of omelette and the combination was fantasti-co

Cafe Sopra @ Fratelli Fresh - Round 2

OMG this place is great! This is our 2nd time in 2 weeks and the food is as fantastic as ever.
5 people, 2 salads, 5 mains, 3 desserts, 8 coffees and 1 hot chocolate.

Squid Ink Risotto

Osso Bucco

Whole Baked Trout

Farfelle, Smoked Chicken, Leek and Grain Mustard

Food was good as always. I loved the Farfalle with Smoked Chicken, Leek and Grainy Mustard. The combination was light but still creamy and tasty. The Baked Trout was fresh and very salty! Meat balls were very fresh and tasty. (I've not posted the pic as it was blurry, my fault!) Squid Ink Risotto tasted just like the one in Italy. Osso Bucco was good too.

Buttermilk Pudding

Banofi Pie

The Banofi Pie was to die food. It had just the right combination of crunchy biscuit based, banana flavoured toffee and cream. The Buttermilk pudding and fresh berries was very refreshing. The Tiramisu was made with sweet brioche layers and a good dose of alcohol but alas the mascarpone cheese was too rich for my liking.

It's too difficult to put my experience into words so I recommend that you give it a try for yourselves.

Oopss.. looks like I got some of my days mixed up as I've posted Friday's night dinner before this post but it doesn't matter as dinner was great!

Adlin and I went to a little quaint Korean restaurant called Haemil in Circular Quay. It's a small place but with a baby grand piano in the middle of the restaurant! I was really excited as it's not everyday you get the owner of the restaurant playing classical music when you're having dinner. OK he didn't play all throughout dinner but only when requested. But when he did play, he played with emotions.

BibimbabBeef Bulgogi

Back to the food. We ordered Bibimbab and Beef Bulgogi. We now know how to correctly stir a Bibimbab. When H arrived like 1.5 hours later, he got the spicy squid bento box w/ tempura and fruits. The spicy squid was good but I have to admit the other 2 were so-so. The kimchi was good though and so was the potato salad and fish cake. Very yummy. When we asked for more they were all gone :( I would definitely go back to try the other dishes as this place is super cosy with excellent and friendly service.

Ichiban-Boshi (Galleries Victoria)

Ichiban-Boshi is a popular place and as usual we had to wait in line to get a place to seat. We got Tokyo Ramen, Tantamen and Katsu Curry with Rice.
I found the broth for the tokyo ramen a little too salty for my liking but the pork was nice and tender and the egg was tasty.

Tantamen Noodle - I love this dish as the broth is rich and tasty.
Katsu Chicken Curry w/ Rice. I love anything with Japanese Curry and this is no exception.

Thai Brown Rice

Friday night dinner was at Thai Brown Rice, Bondi Junction. We started with Chicken Wings for entree which was yummy. I think it was marinated with lots of honey! H got Crab Fried Rice which was so-so. I didn't see any crab meat in there! For myself, I got King Prawns Omelette with rice. The omelette was fluffy and tasty but the king prawns.. tiny!

Overall, I found the food pretty average. However, the place was packed and they seem to have loads of take-away orders. hmm.. maybe we didn't order the right food?

Roast Chicken

I made Roast Chicken on Tuesday with Green Beans and Carrots. Don't mean to blow my own horn but I have to say so myself that it tasted GOOD. :P

Sydney Fish Market

We decided to head off to the fish market on Saturday as I've been craving salmon Sashimi. Once there H suggested we treat ourselves to Singapore Chilli Crab. We also got the Small Seafood Platter and Salmon Sashimi.

The Singapore Chilli Crab was a big let down as it doesn't taste at all like what it's suppose to be! It tasted like watered down sweet chilli sauce! The crab however was very fresh as what you would expect, and cheap compared to eating at a restaurant. The crab was $45/kg and if you want them to cook it for you they charge an additional $10/kg .The small seafood platter was yummy (as above). It had 2 fish fillets, 2 prawn cocktails, 2 crab stick and a handful of calamari. The batter was tasty, nice and crispy. My favourite from this dish was the calamari.
My favourite is the salmon sashimi with seaweed as I love salmon sashimi. The only gripe I have with the sashimi at the fish market is that they don't know how to slice the sashimi. They need some training from the chefs at Hamachi-Ya or Azuma!

Cafe Sopra @ Fratelli Fresh

We headed off to Fratelli Fresh to buy some fresh vegies to cook for dinner tonight. However, when we got there we decided to have a quick snack (2pm) at the cafe upstairs and what a good thing we did, because, we've found the best modern Italian in Sydney!

When we got there at 2-ish the place was packed. We didn't wait too long in the queue as luckily for us the people standing in front of us left before they got their table and 2 minutes later we were shown our seats. We were seated by the window with a view of the whole cafe. It has great atmosphere where everyone was enjoying their food and company of friends. When seated we noticed that they only had the wine list on the table and what an extensive wine list it was. There must have been more then 50 wines on that list! The menu was on a big chalk board prop against the wall and every time a dish was sold out they will cross it.
The menu board (a third of it)

Back to the food, sis and H got the lamb ragu. It was very very good. The ragu was cooked with lots of rosemary which complimented the lamb really well. The sauce was tasty with a hint of rosemary and tomato. The lamb itself was very tasty and tender with the occasional fatty / chewy bits (am thinking tendons?) in the ragu which I loved.
Lamb Ragu

I had the Pan Fried Sardines and Stewed Cherry Tomatoes. Yum! The dish was visually stunning as well (check out the pic). They had Bruschetta bread at the bottom of the plate followed by Cherry tomatoes and the fish sitting at the top of the pile with a nice basil and pine nut pesto. The sardines were fishy but I think this complimented the dish rather then take away from it. The stewed tomatoes complimented the saltiness of the sardines and so did the pesto.

We also had a side of Rocket and Parmesan salad which was to die for. It's the best I've ever tasted. Would have liked some Parmesan slivers on the salad though.

Chatswood BBQ King

Lunch in Chatswood BBQ king. We ordered Roast Duck with Rice, Roast Duck with noodle soup and Soya Chicken with rice. Nothing spectacular here as I've tasted better soya chicken (much better) and roast duck. The best is still BBQ King in Haymarket, Sydney.

Every time we have a holiday that falls on weekday H and I will try to head to Hamachi-Ya for lunch. Today H got the Sakura Bento Box which is what he always gets and I got the special for the day.

Sakura Box is made up of sashimi, teriyaki chicken, tempura and rice. The teriyaki chicken is tasty and doesn't taste like it's been marinated in one of those sauces you can buy from the asian grocery store. The tempura is proper tempura not like those with batter from the fish and chips shop but alas it was cold when it got to our table. And last but not least, sashimi. Salmon sashimi is to die for as it melts on your tongue.... yummmmmm.....
Sakura Bento Box $19.80

The special of the day was sushi, sashimi, grilled salmon salad, karage chicken, takoyaki balls, miso soup and a choice of green tea or wine. I love the sashimi as pointed out above (melts on your tongue), karage was good, nice and crispy. Takoyaki balls were ok, nothing spectacular. The squid was pretty rubbery. The grilled salmon was a bit dry. Was thinking if they were leftover from yesterday?
Hamachi-Ya Special $ 12.80

All in all this place has got good food at really reasonble prices. Anyways enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed eating the food! :)

Keith's Birthday dinner = Zilver, Chinatown.
Food wasn't that great. But it's value for money as we paid $40 each for peking duck and duck noodle, mud crab with vermicelli, steam fish in ginger and shallot, deep fried pigeon, sweet and sour pork (sorry no pics, one of the more popular dishes), shantong chicken(am not sure what this chicken dish is called!?), white fungus and mushrooms.
